On Legal Education and Real Education: A Reaction to Scott Turow’s Bestseller, “One L”

Aspirations are free but fulfillment costs greater risks. Our goals, as we perceive them, are better off as concepts rather than undertakings because soon enough, we come to realize that it is a necessity to put our lives at stake in exchange of greener pastures. The risk is that, one wrong move can totally ruin us and for that, we find our pursuit monstrous and foreboding.

For aspiring lawyers, the first year of law school is a major breakthrough in their lives. I, for one, admit that I believed my first year was a step towards the fulfillment of my goals and aspirations, which appeared to me, was just a few steps away. Eventually, law school disproved my first impression.

Upon reading Scott Turow’s “One L”, it reminded me of my first formative years in law school and all the circumstances I have undergone to continue living my dream. Turow narrated his experiences while thriving to “learn to love the law”. He took into account all the incidents he went through in Harvard Law School, the oldest but most prestigious law school in United States and even in the world. “One L” is actually a coined term used to refer the freshmen in Harvard Law School. Turow, in the book, revealed the tacit competition prevalent in the institution—a competition not only among the students, but also between the students and the professors and even more, a competition that creates a ruckus within themselves. The book unmasked a world, hidden in the prestige of scholastic endeavor, as a collaboration of hope, passion, pressure, comprehension, pain, remorse and faith. Turow then emphasized that education is attained not only through books and publications but most importantly, by experiencing reality.

“One L” is more than just a description of Harvard Law School. Somehow, it manifested the reality in every institution, as perceived by every student. Hence, here follows real education.

Intelligence is a prerequisite to success. Entering and most significantly, getting through law school entails lifelong prestige and honor for a person. But to attain it, determination, perseverance and intelligence must be possessed by a student. Without any of these, entering would be preposterous, much more survival.

The academic institution then tends to the most intelligent and outstanding students in the country. Intelligence is very much rendered importance since the mastery of the law is one of the criteria for a competent and credible lawyer. A lawyer, at all times, must protect and master the law as it governs life—our daily routines, our rights, our goals and career, our every action. And as protectors of the law, lawyers should attain the same honor and respect that is directed to law. In a law school, every student yearns to establish that same honor and respect. A law school then becomes an assembly of “people that would own the world”, as implied by Turow. The list of remarkable academic and extracurricular achievements of a student is one’s own gate pass to be granted with premium legal education. Similarly, Turow related to his readers how outstanding students are in Harvard Law School. It somehow becomes quite disappointing to people who think highly of themselves for it shakes them to a reality that there are people way better than they already are. With these given circumstances, every student strives to outshine each other and claim dominance. In a crowd where everyone seems to be shining with self-made glamour, it is suicide not to keep up with the competition.

Competition has become typical to all law students. It seems to have diffused in the air they breathe, though no one openly admits it. As Turow puts it in his book, students desire to validate their presence and dexterity by establishing good impressions. Learning then surfaces as a mere result of a challenge for competency and supremacy. Good grades and a professor’s good impression are the driving factors why students study and excel, somewhat defeating the purpose of learning things “by heart”.

Competition is not at all bad. Perhaps it may create shrewd but vicious individuals who assert their authority rather aggressively, but it encourages an environment of dedication and determination to acquire excellence. Nevertheless, there’s no good brought by too much competition.

With the effects of competition blatant in the institution, students felt the need to demoralize the obvious attempts of other students to endorse themselves by showing off in classes. This situation was depicted in the story and likewise in any ordinary classroom setting. The majority of students hence develop hostility to these “learned exhibitionists” as a consequence of their surmounting insecurity. Seeing this, Turow shared that a self-conflict materialized—his hesitation to contribute in classroom discussion for the fear of appearing as a “show-stealer”. This kind of outlook portrays cautiousness but being swallowed by inhibitions, impedes one from being educated. As a quote would say, “Without courage, wisdom bears no fruit,” a student’s diffidence overshadows one’s zeal for learning, leaving just a marginal and diminishing impact of education. However of course, overconfidence is not a better option. Overconfidence transpires when a person is being overwhelmed by too much competition that he or she vies for dominance for self-satisfaction. Given that a law school is a throng of competent scholars, to expose oneself in unhealthy competition creates a personality that is, problematic.

Turow emphasized that when one enters law school, one gets “to meet his or her enemy”. Partly because the proponents of the law exude intelligence, their perspective on things deviates from the ordinary. Certain beliefs and attributes are being conveyed to the students further resulting to a psychological metamorphosis. For instance, traditionalists depend on moral and emotional values as criteria for judgment. However, most proponents of the law refute the influence of emotions especially sympathy in making judgments. They uphold the law as the only rightful basis for judgment. For the conformists, detachment from emotion would be vile and inhumane but for the unorthodox, it would ensure justice. Turow elaborated that with this environment, a student of the law “meets his or her enemy”. The conviction that only the law provides objectivity to certain situations causes people to be indoctrinated. People, law students in particular, begin to depend too much on law in their reasoning that somehow turns eventually into an obsession. It does not necessarily mean that believing in the law is bad; but the complete isolation from emotional perspective creates the “heartless enemy”. Going back to Turow’s narratives, he expounded his view on this matter when he comprehended Sechmann’s intention with all his hypothetical questions. These hypothetical questions are implications that most lawyers, with their conformity to the law, forgot what it’s like to be quite human—to use their emotions to consider others. The “enemy” that any law student meets is nothing but himself, a self that became a product of an objective but detached education.

All the insights shared by Scott Turow somehow exist in the society we are in today. Turow simply tells us that more than the education provided to us through books and lectures is a type of education that we establish for ourselves—the education catered by real life. It is not enough to rely on academic knowledge for us to believe one can conquer life’s challenges. The key to success is our capacity to balance our academics with the knowledge we acquire by experience. That is the real test of intelligence.

Trillanes at ang Ayala Tension

Muling napatigil ang bansa sa muling pagkakaroon ng tensyon sa Makati dulot ng Magdalo, isa sa mga grupong tumiwalag sa Hukbong Sandatahan ng Pilipinas sa kanilang kagustuhang mapababa sa puwesto si Pangulong Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo at mabago ang gobyerno. Pinangunahan ang Magdalo ng dating militar at ngayo’y si Senador Antonio Trillanes. Noong Huwebes, bisperas ng pagdiriwang ng Araw ni Bonifacio, nagulantang ang lahat nang nagsitayuan sina Trillanes at kanyang mga kasamahan papalabas ng Makati RTC. Ang lalong nakapagpataka ay ang paglabas ng husgado, pagkausap sa press at higit sa lahat, pagdating sa Manila Peninsula sa pamamagitan lamang ng paglalakad sa Ayala nang walang sinumang pumigil sa kanila. Matapos nito ay nagpa-press conference ang grupo at dito nila ipinahayag ang kanilang panghihikayat sa pag-aaklas. Nakapalibot naman sa labas ng hotel ang hukbong militar, PNP, at lahat ng sangay panseguridad pati na rin ang medya. Maya-maya ay nagpapasok na sila ng tangke, nagpaputok ng baril at gumamit ng tear gas upang mapasok at mapasuko ang mga nag-aaklas. Sa pagkagat ng dilim ay sumuko na rin ang grupo nina Trillanes at kasabay ng pagsukong ito, ang pagkakaposas naman sa mga mediamen upang sumama rin sila papuntang Camp Crame. Kinalaunan ay inimplementa sa bansa ang curfew mula 12 am hanggang 5 am. At magpasahanggang-ngayon ay nasa custodiya pa rin ng gobyerno ang mga salarin.
Hinahangaan ko ang paninindigan ni Sen. Trillanes dahil kahit sa pangalawang beses na alam niyang mapaparusahan siya, ipinagpatuloy pa rin niya ang kanyang plano na mapababa si PGMA sa puwesto kahit pa wala siyang suporta mula sa oposisyon. Ngunit, inaamin kong lubha akong nalungkot pagkat para bang maraming kulang at mali sa kanyang aksyon. Kung susuriing mabuti, maraming loopholes ang mga naganap. Una sa lahat, nakakatawa nga namang isipin na kung aaksyon man sina Trillanes ay para bang wala itong organisadong plano at para bang lahat ay biglaan lamang. Sabihin man nating ito ay biglaan, hindi ba naisip ni Trillanes na sa mga nauna niyang plano ng pag-aklas, mga planong may ispesipikong plano na talaga, di naging maganda ang kinahinatnan? Kung gayon, kung magsasagawa man siya ulit, hindi ba dapat ay maging maayos na ito? Nakakatawa lang isipin na para bang ang nangyari ngayon ay mas malala pa sa kanyang mga naunang plano, na para bang wala talaga itong nagawang impact sa mamamayan. Pangalawang puntos ay ang kapansin-pansing pag-overkill ng gobyerno kina Trillanes. Kitang-kita naman na ang mga kasama ni Trillanes ay sadyang di sing-brusko ng mga opisyal ng pamahalaan kung kaya’t walang hustisya ang pagtratong natanggap nina Trillanes. Isa pang kawalang hustisya ay ang pagposas sa mga taga-medya sa kadahilanang may ilang mga Magdalo ang nakapuslit dahil sa pagkukunwaring medya. Kung kumpleto pa sa tangke at kagamitan ang puwersang ipinadala ng gobyerno, paanong ang paisa-isang mga Magdalo ay nakapuslit pa sa kanila? At bukod pa rito, bakit pa kinailangang maganap ang tensyon sa Manila Peninsula at hindi agad ito naresolbahan noong malapit pa sa Makati RTC o nasa Ayala si Trillanes? Kung totoo ngang may intelligence report na ang gobyerno na magaganap ang tensyon sa Makati, hindi ba naaksyunan ng intelligence na ito ang isang aktwal na tawag mula sa Makati RTC ukol sa pag-wawalk-out nina Trillanes?
Noong rehimen ni Marcos, kilala ang salitang “Moro-Moro”. Isa itong uri ng drama sa teatro na ginamit na deskripsyon sa magkakasunod na marahas na pangyayaring diumano’y bahagi lamang ng plano ni Marcos upang maipagpatuloy ang Batas Militar. Nakakalungkot mang pagdudahan ang paninindigan ng ating mga hinalal na opisyal, sino nga ba namang hindi makakaisip na baka naman lahat ng pangyayaring ito ay parang isang “pagsasadula” rin tulad ng lahat ng naganap dati? Sa takbo ng pulitika natin ngayon, sino na nga ba ang dapat paniwalaan? Ano na nga ba ang katotohanan?

Reaksyon tungkol sa Naganap na Interfaith Rally

Tinatayang 85,000 katao ang nagtungo sa Makati upang sumali sa Interfaith Rally noong Biyernes. May tema ang Interfaith Rally na “Manindigan Para sa Katotohanan, Katarungan at Pagbabago” at layunin nitong maipahayag sa nakaupong Pangulo na wala na sa kanya ang tiwala ng mamamayang nagluklok sa kanya sa posisyon dahil hindi niya pinahalagahan ang pag-iral ng katotohanan, katarungan at malinis na pamamahala. Sa Interfaith Rally, walang pulitiko ang inaasahang magsalita sa mga rallyista ngunit bilang punong-lungsod ng Makati at ng UNO (United Opposition), nagbigay ng mensahe si Jejomar Binay. Kasunod nito, nagsipagbigay na rin ng mensahe sina Joseph Ejercito Estrada at Corazon Aquino na parehong dismayado sa ikinikilos ng pangulo natin ngayon. Ang pinakamahalagang kaganapan sa Rally ay ang pagsasalita ni Jun Lozada sa publiko na talaga namang nag-iwan ng mahahalaga at nakahihikayat na kaisipan.
Inaamin kong hindi ako nakapunta sa Rally dahil may mga kailangan akong gawin para sa aking mga magulang noong Biyernes at may Rally man o wala ay plano ko talagang hindi pumasok ng eskwelahan. Ngunit nais ko talagang makiisa sa Rally na magaganap. Nais ko ring maipahayag ko ang aking paninidigan para sa katotohanan. Sa totoo lang, marami nang tao ang nagsabi sa akin ng kanilang pagkuwestiyon kung ang rally bang ito ay may patutunguhan. Tanong ng karamihan, “Kung matanggal ba si GMA sa posisyon, sino ba ang mas karapat-daoat na lider?”, “May magbabago ba kung palitan pa si Gloria?” Lubha akong napaisip ng mga tanong na ito na para bang nawawalan na rin ako ng pag-asa.
Pero nang marinig ko sa telebisyon ang panawagan ni Lozada, ani niya, “tayo po ay nagrarally di upang magpatalsik na naman ng pinuno ngunit upang tuluyan nang patalsikin ang bulok na sistema ng ating pamahalaan..” doon ko naisip na kapag itinigil ko ang pag-asa, kapag hinayaan ko na lamang na umiral ang bulok na sistema, ano pa ang mangyayari sa aking mga magiging anak, sa susunod na henerasyon?
Para sa akin, hindi porket hindi agaran ang nakikita nating pagbabago, dapat na tayong mawalan ng pag-asa. Parang sa pagpapalakad ng negosyo—ituring natin na ang ating negosyo ay ang Pilipinas, tayo, mga mamamayan, ang may-ari at ang gobyerno ang itinalaga nating tagapangasiwa o manager, papayag ba tayo na kupit-kupitan lang tayo ng ating manager kahit pa sa palagay naman natin ay sapat na ang ating ibinibigay sa kanya? At sa pagkakataong nasibak na natin siya, ibig sabihin ba nito na dapat na nating itigil ang negosyo dahil sa nagkamali tayo ng nakuhang tagapangasiwa? Mas lugi ata tayo doon dahil hindi man lang naibalik sa atin ang pag-asang ating naikapital.
Inaamin ko, napapgod rin akong umasa lalo pa’t parang wala talagang nangyayari pero kung ang lahat ng tao ay mapapagod ring umasa na tulad ko, hindi kaya lalong mas walang mangayayri sa atin?
Nakakatuwa na nagkakaisa ang mga pribadong sektor at mga unibersidad sa pagsibak sa katiwalian. Malaki ang naitutulong nito sa pagpapaalab ng natutulog na damdamin ng mga tao. Nakakalungkot lamang dahil marami pa rin ang pagod at tulog. Sa katunayan, mas pabor pa sa kanila ang magsawalang kibo na lamang na panlilinlang na ginagawa sa kanila. Isang halimbawa ay ang isang status message na nakita ko sa aking listahan sa Yahoo messenger. Ayn sa kanya: “We, Mapuans, are studious. We prefer studying than going to rallies.” Sa inis ko, sinabi ko sa kanya: “Nice shout-out. Soo Passive. Nakakahiya. Pilipino pa man din kayong naturingan.” At binura ko na rin siya sa listahan ko. Kung nakausap ko lang siya sa personal, marahil nasabi kong hindi sa loob lamang ng silid-aralan nakakakuha ng kaalaman. Una sa lahat, ang mga itinuturo sa atin sa eskwela ay wala pa sa kalingkingan ng makikita natin sa tunay na buhay. Hindi sapat na nalaman lamang natin o narinig o nabasa, dahil ang karunungan ay makukuha lamang kung nararamdaman at nararanasan. Hindi sapat na maniwala kang mahirap ang Pilipinas dahil sabi ng mga istatistiko dahil hindi naman naranasan ng mga libro na may mga batang kahit may malubhang sakit ay pagala-gala sa Buendia upang mamalimos ng barya o maging barker para may makain, na may mga estudyanteng pumapasok sa prostitusyon dahil kulang ang suweldo nila sa paghuhugas ng pinggan sa mga karinderya, na may mga taxi driver na pinapaghosto at hinahatid pa ang kanilang mga anak sa mga dayuhan magkapera lang o isang pamilyang may anim na anak na nakatira lang sa pinagtagpi-tagping yero sa may Taft. Aanhin pa ang kaalaman kung wala naman tayong karunungan sa paggamit nito?
Siguro nga may malaking dahilan kung bakit nararanasan natin ang lahat ng ito. Sinasabi lang nito sa atin na bilang mga susunod na tagapangasiwa ng ating kinabukasan ng mundo, dapat lamang nating maranasan kung ano ang mga kahihinatnan kung tayo’y manlilinlang o magpapalinlang. Mabuti na rin na nararanasan natin ang mga pagrarally na ito dahil kahit papaano’y nabubuksan ang ating isipan sa kung ano ang mali at ano ang tamang dapat gawin upang iwaksi ito. Walang bagay na nakukuha sa mabilisan, kung gusto talaga natin ng pagbabago, gumawa tayo ng paraan upang baguhin ang lahat at magsimula tayo sa ating sarili. Di magtatagal, makikita rin natin ang pagbabagong ating hinahangad.

Labanan ang Kasuklam-suklam na Tratadong JPEPA

Ang JPEPA o Japan-Philippines Economic Partnership Agreement ay isang kasunduang pangkalakalan sa pagitan ng Pilipinas at Japan. Layunin nitong matiyak na ang eksport ng serbisyo at produktong agrikutural ng bansa ay tatangkilikin ng bansang Japan. Malaki ang tulong nito upang mapaunlad ang industriya ng eksport sa ating bansa at mapagyabong ang produksyon at agrikultura. Sa punto-de-bista ng mga ekonomista, malaki ang tulong nito upang mapataas ang GNP ng bansa para sa mas malagong ekonomiya. Ngunit ang mga pribilehiyong hatid ng JPEPA ay may kakambal na kamalasan rin pala. Nasasaad rin sa kasunduang ito, na ang Pilipinas ang magsisilbing tambakan ng mapanganib at nakalalasong basurang galing sa mga industriya, pabrika, ospital at mga bayan ng Japan. Kapalit pala ng isang pangako ng pag-unlad ng ekonomiya ay ang pagiging dumpsite ng ating bansa, na sa kasalukuyan nga ay nakakararanas na rin agad ng mga problema sa basura. Dahil sa pangangampanya ng mga environmentalist, kahit papaano’y hindi natuloy ang pagsasakatuparan ng JPEPA. Ngunit, ayon kay Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago, pinuno ng Foreign Affairs Committee ng Senado, anumang oras ay maaaring ibalik muli ang proposisyon ukol sa JPEPA sa Hulyo, kasabay ng pagkakahalal sa mga bagong senador ng bansa.
Maganda ang mga pangakong binitawan ng JPEPA para sa kaunlaran ng bansa. Sa katunayan, isa itong paraaan upang makapaghain ng mas maraming trabaho ang gobyerno para sa mga tao, nang sa gayo’y maresolbahan na ang isyu ukol sa kawalan ng trabaho. Ngunit, napakalaking kasalanan naman sa bansa ang pagpapatupad nito. Isipin na lamang natin, papayag ba tayong maging basurahan na lamang ng ibang bansa? Ang masama pa nito, aanhin ng bansa ang maraming trabaho kung mas nakakararami ang mga bumubuo ng lakas-paggawa na nagkakasakit dulot ng kemikal at nukleyar na basura na hatid ng Japan sa atin? kung ngayon pa nga lang na nagkakaproblema na ang bansa sa paglalagyan ng basura ng mga Pilipino, pihadong mas lalaki ang problema ng bansa kung maaprubahan ang JPEPA.
Napakahalaga ng magandang ekonomiya upang magkaroon ng magandang pamumuhay ang mga Pilipino. Ngunit tatandaan natin na ang teritoryo at ang mamamayan ay mga elemento rin ng estado, at kung wala sila, walang pag-unlad at wala ring saysay ang pag-unlad. Isipin nating mabuti, ang bansang Pilipinas ang magsusuplay ng agrikultural na hilaw na produkto sa Japan; ibig sabihin, sa Pilipinas mismo gagawin at ipoprodyus ang mga i-eeksport sa kanila. Kung ang Pilipinas ay magsisilbing tambakan ng basura sa Japan, magdudulot ito ng napakalaking problema sa produksyon dahil una, limitado na lamang ang lugar ng produksyon, pangalawa, ang nukleyar at kemikal na basura ay nakasama sa kalusugan ng mamamayan kung kaya’t mahina ang lakas-paggawa at mabagal ang produksyon, at pangatlo, may malaking epekto ito sa pagbaba ng kalidad ng produksyon (kontaminado at mahunang mga produkto). Sa ganitong sitwasyon, mapapagtanto ng Japan na ang pangangapital sa atin ay walang silbi at pilit na nilang iuurong ang JPEPA. Natigil man ang JPEPA at marahil nalugi ang mga Hapon sa atin, mas malaking dagok pa rin ito ng kawalan sa ating banda pagkat naiwan tayo sa isang madumi, lugi at mas lalong naghihirap na sitwasyon. Mahihirapan rin tayong makabangon muli pagkat hindi naman mabuti ang kalagayan ng ating mga sangkap pang-produksyon. Sa huli, tayo rin ang talo.
Naalala ko tuloy ang isang kanta, “..sayang rin ang pag-unld kung makakasira ng kalikasan..” Totoo, aanhin pa ang pag-unlad kung wasak na ang sarili nating bansa? O siguro nga mas tamang sabihing, may pagunlad ba sa isang wasak na bansa?

Nakatutuwang ispin na binuhay ng teatro ang istorya sa pagbagsak ng Roma na matagal nang nakatala sa kasaysayan ng mundo. Subalit bukod sa pagsasadula sa kasaysayan, naging daan rin ito, upang maipakita sa lahat ang magagandang aral na maari nating gamitin upang mapagbuti ang ating pamumuhay sa kasalukuyan at pati na rin sa hinaharap. Lahat ng ito ay pinatotohanan ng tragikomedya ni Dürrenmatt na Romulus D’ Grayt.
Ang Romulus D’ Grayt ay tungkol sa mga pangyayari sa kaharian ng huling emperador ng Roma. Nagsimula ito sa tangka ni Kapitan Ispurio Tito Mamma upang ipaalam kay Emperador Romulus ang pananalakay ng mga Tyuton sa teritoryo ng imperyong Romano. Ngunit, siya naman ay napigilan ng mga alagad ng emperador na sina Piramo at Akiles at pinayuhan siyang mag-intay ng dalawang linggo bago kausapin ang emperador. Kinabukasan, sinabi ng Ministro ng Digmaan na si Tulio Rotundo na nagtatagumpay na ang mga Tyuton sa pagsalakay sa Roma. Kasabay nito, dumating rin ang mga ka-alyansa ng emperador at mga sundalo ng Hukbong Romano upang hingin ang patnubay ni Romulus sa pakikipagdigmaan ng Roma laban sa mga Tyuton. Sa kasamaang palad, pinayuhan lamang sila ng emperador na manahimik na lamang at huwag nang labanan ang mga Tyuton. Naki-eksena rin ang negosyanteng si Cesarup at inalok niya si Romulus ng 10 milyon na makakatulong ng malaki upang maisagip ang Roma kapalit ng pangako ng emperador na ipasusuot niya ang mga pantalon ni Cesarup sa mamamayang Romano at ipapakasal sa kanya ang anak niyang si Rhea na nakatakda nang ikasal sa maharlikang bihag ng mga Tyuton na si Emiliano. Gaano man kalaki at gaano man siya kinukumbinsi ng kanyang asawa na si Julia at bayaw na si Zeno, hindi pa rin pumayag ang emperador. Habang natutulog ang emperador, nagkatipon-tipon ang mga kawani ng kaharian sa kanyang palasyo na halos naging manukan na. Napag-planuhan ng hinalal na Imperial Marshall na si Marte na itakas ang Reyna Julia at Prinsesa Rhea bilang paghahanda sa digmaan. Sa kabilang banda, sinunog naman ng Ministro ng Digmaan na si Tulio Rotundo ang mga mahahalagang papeles ng kaharian. Kasabay nito, dumating naman ang nakatakas na bihag ng mga Tyuton na si Emiliano. Nang malaman niya ang alok ni Cesarup na kasal kapalit ng 10 milyon para sa Roma, inatasan niya si Rhea na magpakasal kay Cesarup. Dahil sa pagmamahal ay pumayag si Rhea ngunit nalaman ito ng emperador at hayagang tinutulan ang pangyayari. Matapos nito, nagkasagutan ang mag-asawang hari at reyna. Nais ng Reyna Julia na kumilos ang emperador upang maligtas ang Roma at ito ay sa pamamagitan ng pagsang-ayon kay Cesarup. Sa kanilang pag-aaway inamin ni Romulus na pinakasalan niya ang Reyna Julia para sa kanyang ambisyon, hndi ang kapangyarihan bilang hari ng Roma kundi upang tuluyan nang ibagsak ang Roma. Ipinahayag ni Romulus na ikinahihiya niya ang kanyang paghahari pagkat natanggap niya ito sa pamamagitan ng digmaan, sa pamamaslang ng kanyang mga alagad at hindi dahil karapat-dapat siya rito. Ninanais niyang wasakin ang isang imperyong kumukupkop sa korupsyon at karahasan. Pagkatapos nito ay pumasok naman sa silid ang anak niyang si Rhea at napagkuwentuhan nilag mag-ama ang naunsiyaming pag-iibigan ni Rhea at Emiliano. Payo ng emperador sa anak: na unahin niya ang pagmamahal kay Emiliano at hindi ang pagsagip sa Roma. Pagkaalis namn ni rhea ay nagsulputan sina Emiliano, Zeno, Tulio Rotundo, Marte, Ispurio Tito Mamma at kahit ang kusinerong si Quasiwalang Modo upang isagawa ang balak nilang asasinasyon kay Emperador Romulus. Naawat naman sila sa pagdating ng mga Tyuton. Kinabukasan ay natanggap ng emperador ang balita na ang bansa ng Reyna Julia at Prinsesa Rhea at ng mga kasama nila sa pagtakas sa Alexandria ay lumubog at lahat sila ay namatay. Dahil dito, tinanggap ng emperador ang nakahrap sa kanyang kamatayan sa pagdating ng mga Tyuton. Ngunit nang dumating ang mga Tyuton, naging kaibigan pa ito ni Romulus dahil mahilig rin ang emperador ng Tyuton na si Odoakro na mag-alaga ng manok. Ang akala ng emperador na papatayin siya ni Odoakro ay hindi nagkatotoo pagkat siya ay nag-iisip na isuko ang pamumuno sa mga Tyuton kay Romulus dahil ayaw niyang pagharian ang isang marahas na Imperyo. Sa huli, nabuhay si emperador Romulus at ipinasa niya ang kanyang kaharian kay Odoakro at nagretiro kasama ng itlog ng kanyang mga manok.
Noong una, inakala kong isang hindi mabuting hari si Romulus. Para sa akin, kasakiman ang pagwawalang-bahala niya habang ang kanyang imperyo ay tuluyan nang nahuhulog sa kamay ng kanilang kalaban. Ngunit nang ipaliwanag niya ang kanyang paniniwala, unti-unti ko siyang naintindihan. Ang tunay na pagmamahal pala sa bayan ay hindi nagpapahiwatig na ibibigay ng isang mamamayan ang kanyang buong buhay ara sa kanyang bayan. Ang tuany na pagmamahal ay tungkol sa pakikipaglaban paea sa kug ano ang tama ara sa bayan. Hindi pala lahat ng pagsasakripisyo sa bayan ay isang halimbawa ng kabayanihan.
Marahil marami rin ang hindi nakaintindi sa pananaw ni Emperador Romulus noong una. Kung iispin nga naman, hindi tama na unahi ang pansariling interes kaysa sa interes ng bayan. Ngunit, nakita ko rin na tama ang pananaw ni Romulus. Hindi nga naman nararapat na hayaan niyang manatili pa sa mundo ang ugat ng karahasan. Nasabi nga ng emperador na ang “Romar ang sumira sa kanayng sarili.” Naging pugad ng karahasan, korupsyon, kasakiman, ganid at panlalamang ang Roma at di karapat-dapat na ipaglaban pa ang isang bayang kasamaan lamang naman pala nag pinapanigan. Sa kabila nito, inamin rin naman ni Romulus na hindi rin tama ang pagsira niya sa Roma. Dahil sa digmaan, marami ring pamilya ang nawalan ng mga ama, ng tirahan, ng hanapbuhay at ng buhay. Ngunit para sa kanya, kung ito lamang ang tanging paraan upang mailigtas ang mundo mula sa karahasan ay gagawin niya.
Minsang naikatwiran ni Zeno sa emperador na ang Roma ang mundo at sa pagunaw ng Roma ay pagunaw rin ng mundo. Sagot naman sa kanya ng emperador na ang Roma ay isa lamang alikabok ng mundo at hindi matatapos ang mundo sa pagbagsak ng Roma, patuloy pa rin ang mundo sa pag-inog. May katwiran ang nasabing ito ng emperador. Ang mundo ay hindi lamang sa Imperyong Romano nakatutok. Marami pang mas mahahalagang bagay ang nararapat bigyan ng pansin kaysa sa pamumulitika. Higit na mas mahalaga ang mamamayan kaysa sa bayan pagkat ang tao ang siyang bumubuhay sa bayan. Kung ang bayan sa palalo lamang, nararapat lamang na wakasan ang kasakiman nito pagkat ito ang mas makabubuti sa mamamayan, na siyang pinakamahlagang elemento ng estado.
Kung ikukumpara natin ang Roma sa kasalukuyang panahon, masasabi natin na sa kabila ng pagkakaiba ng taon at pag-iisip ng tao, halos kapareha nito ang nangyayari sa atin ngayon. Ika nga nila, “History repeats itself.” Isang kabalintunaan ang pagmamahal ng ating mga halal na opisyal para sa bayan. Sa kasalukuyan, masyado silang nakatutok sa pamumulitika sa layunin nila na “mapagbuti ang kalagayan ng bayan.” Dahil tuloy rito, nakakalimutan pagtuunan ng pansin ng gobyerno ang kapakanan at pamumuhay ng mamamayan. Bukod pa rito, unti-unti ay natutulad na rin tayo sa Roma. Mas malaki ang ginugugol na badyet ng gobyerno sa kagamitang at depensang militar ng bansa kaysa sa agrikultura at pagkain na pangunahing pangngailangan ng mamamayan. Unti-unti rin ay nilalamon na ng korupsyon ang ating bayan. Kung kaya’t nalulubog tayo sa mga utang, maging ang mga sanggol na Pilipino na hindi pa naipapanganak ay may utang na.
Kung ganito ang mga pangyayari, aantayin pa ba nating humantong tayo sa pagbagsak ng ating lahi o babaguhin na agad natin ang ating masasamang gawi?

Reaksyon ukol sa Dulang, Skin Deep

Madilim ang buong paligid maliban sa puting ilaw na nakatutok kay Isay. Lahat ng manonood ay nakapako ang tingin sa kanya at wari’y nararamdaman ang nilalaman ng kanyang isip at damdamin. Walang naganap na usapan o kahit monolog ng bida. Simple lamang ang konsepto ng dula ngunit sadyang makabuluhan ang mga kaisipang ibinahagi nito. Bukod pa rito, nagng maganda ang special effects ng dula na nakatulong upang mapahanga ang mga manonood. Bagamat nagkaroon ng mga special effects na nakapagpakita ng pagiging moderno na ngayon ng mga dula, napanatili pa rin nila ang mga tradisyunal na konsepto tulad ng pag-arte ng mga bida na kunwari’y mga kagamitan sa gym o klung saanman. Ang simpleng pagkakaayos rin nang entablado ay nakatulong upang matutok lamang ang paningin ng manonood sa mga bida dahil walang kung anumang sagabal sa kanilang paningin. Ang kasabihang “less is more” ay sadyang nangibabaw sa kabuuang konsepto ng dula.
Ang layunin ng dula ay upang mabuksan ang isipan ng mamamayan sa isang materyalistikong mundong ating ginagalawan. Wari’y pinapabulaanan ng dula na para bang upang maging masaya ang isang tao kinakailangan niyang maging maganda ang pisikal na kaanyuan. Ipinapaalala nito na ang kagandahan ng kaanyuan ay di makakapantay sa kagandahan ng kalooban. Sinasabi rin dito na hindi masamang maghangad ng pagbabago kung ito’y para sa ikabubuti ng tao ngunit dapat lamang na malaman natin ang limitasyon ng ating paghahangad. Ang ganid at labis na paghahangad ay walang maidudulot sa atin kundi masama kung kaya’t sa bawat luhong ating inaasam, dapat pa rin nating ipaalaala sa ating sarili na pansamantala lamang ang mga ito, at ang mas mahalagang pangalagaan ay ang mga pangangailangan at pagkakataong mas makatutulong sa ating upang umunlad ang pagkatao.
Sabi nga sa dula na ayon na rin sa nagwaging Miss Universe noong araw na si Gloia Diaz, “Beauty is skin deep but ugliness is to the bone,” ang kagandahan ay karaniwang sa pisikal na any lamang tumutukoy ngunit para tawagin ang isang taong pangit, di nito ibig sabihin na siya’y pangit sa pisikal na hitsura ngunit ito’y nagpapahiwatig na ang kalooban niya’y sadyang masama at hindi maganda. Huwag nating baguhin ang kahulugan ng kagandahan dahil lamang sa moderno ngunit mapaglinlang nating mundo. Ang kagandahan ay hindi lamang para sa mga may matatangos na ilong, mapuputi at makikinis na balat, payat na pangangatawan, magandang tikas atbp., ngunit ang tunay kagandahan ay makikita sa kabukalan ng kalooban.

SONA

Bawat taon, ang pangulo ng bansa ay nagdaraos ng SONA o State of the Nation’s Address upang maipahayag sa bawat mamamayan ng bansa ang kalagayan ng Pilipinas sa lahat ng aspetong mahalaga sa buhay ng mamamayan—pampulitika, panlipunan, pang-ekonomiya, panrelihiyon at marami pang iba. Ito ay mahalaga upang tumalima sa isipan ng bawat mamamayan ang kasalukuyang kalagayan ng bansa at makagawa ang bawat isa ng mga kontribusyong makapagbibigay solusyon sa mga problema ng bawat aspeto o di kaya nama’y makapagpa-ibayo sa mga programang iniukol ng pamhalaan sa pagsasaayos ng bawat aspeto.
Kamakailan ay humarap si Pangulong Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo sa publiko upang ipahayag sa kanila ang kasalukuyang kalagayan ng bansa. Karamihan sa kanyang mga sinabi ay ukol sa kalgayang panlipunan at pang-ekonomiya ng bansa. Tulad ng dati, pinarangalan niya ang mga taong masasabing huwarang mamamayang Pilipino. Bukod pa dito, ipinagmalaki niya ang mga programa ng pamahalaan na ayon sa kanya ay nakatulong sa maraming Pilipino. Kasabay nito ay pinapurihan din niya ang mga kongresista, senador, konsehal o mga kawani ng pamahalaan na sinasabi niyang naging tulay upang makatulong sa mamamayan, sa pamamagitan na rin ng mga programa ng pamahalaan. At sa huli, ipinahayag ng pangulo ang kanyang mga pangakong programa na makakatulog umano sa buhay ng bawat Pilipino upang mapaganda nitong lalo ang estado ng kani-kanilang buhay.
Taon-taon ay ganito ang laman ng SONA ng pangulo—ang lahat ng mabubuting bagay na nagawa ng gobyerno upang makamit ang diumano’y magandang kalagayan ng bansa. Kung kukunin ang konteksto ng bawat salitang nakapaloob sa SONA, State of the Nation’s Address, masasabi nga bang ang lahat ng kanyang naipahayag ay ang totoo at kitang-kitang kalagyan ng bansa sa kasalukuyan? Ang lahat nga ba ng sinabi ng pangulo ay ang siyang estado ng pamumuhay natin ngayon bilang mga mamamayan ng Pilipinas?
Bago pa man naganap ang SONA ng pangulo, bukambibig na ng gobyerno ang magandang estado ng ekonomiya ng bansa. Kung kaya’t sa SONA ay isa ito sa mga ipinagmamalaking tagumpay ng gobyerno para sa bansa. Kung iisipin, nadarama nga ba ng bawat mamaman ang sinasabing pag-unlad na ito? Sa katunayan, marami at patuloy pang dumarami ang mga mamamayang walang trabaho o di kaya nama’y nangingibang-bansa upang humanap ng trabaho. Masasabi nga bang ito ang mga patunay ng pag-unlad ng bansa? Marahil ay totoong gumaganda ang ekonomiya ng bansa ngunit masasabi rin kayang ang pag-unlad na ito ay nadarama ng bawat Pilipino? Ibig ipahiwatig lamang nito na ang sinasabing magandang ekonomiya ng ating pangulo ay nadarama lamang ng kakaunti ngunit prominenteng mga tao at sa realidad, hindi balanse ang distribusyon ng pag-unlad na ito. Karamihan pa rin sa mga Pilipino ay nakadarama ng pagkasadlak sa kahirapan dahil sa mga kakulangan ng trabaho na mas matinding batayan ng sinasabing “pag-unald” at hindi lamang ang paglakas ng piso sa dolyar. Kung totoo nga ang sinasabi ng pangulo na ang bansa ay nasa maunlad na estado, bakit kaya marami pa ring naghihirap, walang makain, walang matirahan at nawawalan ng pag-asa sa pag-unlad?
Nakakatawang isipin na hindi talaga kalagayan ng bansa ang nilalaman ng SONA ng pangulo. Kung titingnan, para lamang itong isang pinaka-aabangang patalastas na pumupuri sa lahat ng magagandang ginawa ng gobyerno para sa bansa. Kung gayon, masasabi pa ba nating ito nga ang SONA o pahayag sa tunay na kalagayan ng PIlipinas?

Acceptability of Human or Organ Cloning for the Improvement of Organ Transplantation

The concept of cloning in the society brings to light the chances of major advancement in technology and improvement of human existence; however, it is said that it would kill the moral and ethical foundations of the society. Cloning is defined as the act of creating species through the knowledge in genetics, and deviating from the natural scheme of creating things which is through reproduction. It has become the most trivial breakthrough in science as it somehow staged the debate between practicality and morality of human life. Indeed, cloning has defiled the sanctity of human life, in the perspective of the moralists; however, scientists claim that through cloning, problems on organ transplantation such as the insufficiency of number of organ donors compared to the receivers would be solved immediately. When this advantage of cloning surfaced, it has stirred a great deal of public interest. Thus the question left unanswered is—can cloning be accepted in the society, if its sole purpose is for organ transplantation to protect human life?
Organ transplantation has become one of the most successful fields in medicine and surgery. This procedure revived the hope of those who have dysfunctional body organs acquired since birth and those who lost theirs through an accident. Because of organ transplantation, many lives were saved and sustained, which only proves its benevolent intention of protecting human life. Unfortunately, organ transplantation is in face of a great adversity—the deficit in population of organ donors compared to the expecting receivers. In line with this, scientists proposed that human or organ cloning would be the best solution to this problem. They insisted that cloning conveys more advantages and it is least likely to cause any harm to humankind. For instance, cloning can be used to create organs needed that will genetically match the immune system of a patient. The patient’s family or loved ones need not to endure the pain of waiting for any organ donor that would help sustain the life of the patient. According to the Human Cloning Foundation, a steadfast supporter for the promotion of cloning, cloning is not just an option for married infertile couples who wish to have children or couples who grieve over the loss of children due to some accident. In fact, organ cloning is definitely encouraged to patients and their families who wish to preserve the life of the patient. As a proof, the foundation cited this insight:
“A middle aged man has an unhealthy heart and suffers from his first heart attack at age 45. He could decide to use human cloning technology to reverse heart attacks. Scientists in the near future believe that they may be able to treat heart attack victims by cloning their healthy heart cells and injecting them into the areas of the heart that have been damaged. Instead for the man becoming part of the statistic, "heart disease is the number one killer in the United States and other industrialized countries," he can now live a long and prosperous life.”
Supporters of cloning then concluded that organ cloning for organ transplantation surely provides several benefits to humankind. This concept heralds the remarkable contribution of medicine for the betterment of human life. They further emphasized that there is absolutely nothing wrong nor anything to be feared with cloning, for it simply elevates the way of man’s living into something more progressive and pro-life.
All the propositions of the supporters of cloning have been explicitly opposed by the Christian society. The most influential people and almost the whole world’s population have been affirming their beliefs and principles through their religion or through being “pro-Christian”. With this, the ethical and moral foundation of the people is based on the teachings of the Christian Bible. In the case of other religions, although Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, Taoists and the like employ different principles compared to the Bible, theologians believe that every religion concurred with the Bible’s first commandment: “I am the Lord, your God. You shall not have other gods before me.” Therefore, morally and spiritually inclined societies condemn the concept of cloning as blasphemous to the Lord for it manifested the greed of man to play the role of god.
As cited by Fr. William Saunders on his article about organ transplant and cloning and as reiterated by the late Pope John Paul II, the Church is definitely not against organ transplantation but rather, the Church highlights its significance as it “nurtures the genuine culture of life in an ethically acceptable manner.” Furthermore, the Church emphasizes that the transfer of organs must occur between a dead person who, in his lifetime, consented to donate his bodily remains for charity, and a living person struggling to keep his life. In addition, the Church inculcates to the minds of the people that although new and better forms of medical treatment have been introduced to develop human life at its best, it is still important to recognize the sacredness of human dignity, for man is not just a body but it has a soul. Therefore since cloning is considered as a blasphemous act against God which creates a dent in our dignity, it will never be morally accepted to the society no matter how feasible and efficient it may be for organ transplantation.

The advantages of cloning for organ transplantation, indeed, have been riveting. Cloning will definitely be an unparalleled accomplishment in medicine and surely, it will have a lasting effect on human life. However, no matter how noble our intentions are, if they are done in an evil manner, its noble purpose can never compensate its immorality. To be able to clone humans or even organs is already a display of man’s malicious meddling with how nature works. It only implies that man has to realize that there are certain limitations in his power over the earth. It does not necessarily mean to be passive on what nature brings us but still, it encourages us to seek for solutions for our problems and yet be humble enough to let nature take over the things man cannot. In conclusion, we are asked to be reactive and never manipulative.
Scientists may argue that this conservative and traditional way of thinking will only cause regression than being liberated from ignorance. But still, let us remind ourselves that there are different types of progress—physical and moral/spiritual. An intelligent mind is trash compared to a pure human’s dignity. Likewise being technologically advanced would be nonsensical if we were undermining humanity thru violating our ethical and moral values. As Socrates have once said, “it is not living that matters but living rightly,” life is given to us to take good care of it, both body and soul. A soul cannot exist with a declining body nor can a body with a perishing soul. Therefore, despite all the benefits of applying cloning to the society, it still cannot conceal the fact that we have neglected our own moral principles.

It has stirred the interest and opinion of the world and divided the people into its supporters and condemners. However due to the prominence of conservative societies, it is still regarded as an unethical and immoral action which therefore, is prohibited. Nevertheless, most of its supporters convince the people on the advantages of cloning for organ transplantation. Supporters say that through cloning, finding the match for a person who desperately needs an organ for transplant would no longer be a big problem. It would benefit the most the improvement of medical and surgical services to help the people.
The world’s most influential people, the Christians, comprise more than half of the world’s population. As part of their faith, they live in accordance to the doctrines of the Bible which clearly brands an action against its principles as immoral and atrocious. Thus when cloning was first introduced, the Christian Church and all the believers of the Bible explicitly rebuked its existence, demeaning it as a work of the evil. In fact, Christians firmly depended on the first commandment in the Old Testament of the Bible: “I am the Lord, Your God. You shall not have other gods before me.” For the Christians, cloning, no matter how benevolent its purpose be, is still against the ten commandments, the Law of God and of Mankind.
On the other hand, supporters of cloning have been striving to redeem it in the eyes of a dogmatic society. They insist that cloning is part of the progress modernization tends, which is technology. And similar to the objectives of technology, the purpose of cloning is to make life of man easier and fulfilling. Through cloning, they further explained, the lack of organ donors or organ matches will no longer be a problem. Those people who are in face of death and in dire need of organ replacement will be assured to achieve the organ they wanted as soon as possible. And for them, cloning isn’t as cruel as playing god but it actually caters benefits for a greater and longer life.
It is upon the public’s discretion whether to choose morality or practicality.

To strive for excellence would be to walk along a cliff. Mel, for four formative years of her life, walked along the cliff of Law School with the hope that she could reach the other end. Along the way, Mel exuded more than just determination and perseverance. Her endeavor was to achieve excellence. Mel had dedicated herself to her academic career, prompting her to be among the most outstanding students at school as a dean’s lister. But for all her triumphs, Mel did not fail to display humility and modesty. No matter how great her achievements are, she is always ready to use these achievements, in any way she can, just to lend her helping hand to anyone who needs it.

Mel goes beyond what others think she can only offer. She is indeed, an epitome of excellence, but also, of love and of friendship. Her warm and affectionate character leads her to love immensely and to be loved more tremendously. She is more than willing to give her everything to the people, she loves the most and she is more than any friend can imagine to be an “ideal” best friend. She may have some imperfections but her pure heart compensates for those. Her company definitely expels any impression of boredom but at serious matters, her company is consoling and compassionate. She never fails to listen to her friend’s adversities and help them get through. She may seem as a typical friend, but knowing her better makes you think of her as an ideal person.

And while Mel has now reached the end of her struggle, she always keeps in mind that her feet are still placed flat on the ground. There are more peaks to reach and cliffs to overcome. Because for Mel, the journey just starts here.

Look far ahead as we race through our own life, with victory waiting to be crossed at the finish line. Then we shall stand, having gained strength beyond measure and having the faith that we could get in the right track, run again and finally, reach the end.

But then again, the finish line marks just the beginning of a new race to run.....

Closing the Cupboard

If you think Math and Physics are the worst subjects ever made, think again. In fact, the hardest thing you could ever find yourself into and that no form of education or tutorial can help you get through it is planning your own life.

It is a lot easier to dream than to execute your plans. Somewhere along the line, fate tries to get in your way and meddle with your affairs. What you thought could’ve been possible seems to be miles away from reality and the worst is, what you have persistently fought for against fate, becomes your biggest failure.

This is why it is hard to plan your life. The end you have in mind entails your fears and doubts. Thus, they all keep you from taking a shot at the risk they call life.

Believe me. I feel it, so perfectly.

I can say that senior year is the hardest period of my life as a student. It is just as if I am stuck at looking forward to the future but finding myself missing the childhood I enjoyed. Suddenly, all my simple dreams come in numerable options, all of which provide a future I doubt will come true. What makes planning my life so difficult is that I know someday things will be changed because there are uncontrollable forces that cause it to.

Aside from change, there’s always the fear of failure. Now that I am almost independent, there is less specific space of landing in case I would fall. There’s only myself whom I can rely on. There’s only my pair of feet that could support me, and the newly sprouted wings that are still vulnerable.

And right now, it made me regret that I ever wished to grow up, if growing up means you have to experience the worst, all by yourself.

But still, the future isn’t something I have to fear. In fact, fears are made to be faced, not to be run away from. It may be the most difficult thing to do but it’s all we could do to have the success we have been shooting for. We can never face that success if we choose to turn our backs at our fears.

Actually, this is just the next stage. And as I travel on, I’ll bring all the things I have learned throughout my highschool life. I’ll bring the bad and the good, whatever made me who I am right now. For if not the bad things, I wouldn’t have seen what is good and if not for the good, never will I long for something much more beautiful.

A symbol for life. For being. For existence. It is a bud where our fruits grow from and from where we find the splendor of our existence. It is a life that flourishes into a garden of wisdom, of beauty and of love, where our purpose is being harvested until the time we finished serving that purpose, and we wither and die.

At this point, let us take you to a moment when a flower is trapped in the confines of ruthless and work-driven Manila.

Sa Loob ng Pugad Baboy

Nakakita ka na ba ng asong parang hindi aso?
Kung iniisip mong nababang-aw na yata ako, puwes nagkakamali ka.

Binuhay ni Apolonio “Pol” Medina ang tauhang si Polgas, isang asong mukhang aso pero isip-tao, para sa kanyang tanyag na komik istrip na “Pugad Baboy”. Nilunsad ito bilang isang black and white komik istrip sa pahayagang Philippine Daily Inquirer noong Mayo 18, 1988 at nabigyang- kulay ito noong ika-3 ng Oktubre 2004 sa pang-Linggong isyu ng nasabing pahayagan. Matapos ang apat na taon, ngayon, isa na itong ganap na komiks na talagang inaabangan ng masugid nitong mambabasa.

Bawal ang pikon sa “Pugad Baboy”

Simple lamang ang ibig sabihin ng pangalan nito; “Pugad Baboy” ibig sabihin, pugad ng mga baboy. Ito ay isang tunay na komunidad sa Bulacan, hilaga ng Maynila, bilang isang pugad ng mga baboy dahil sa marami at mababahong babuyan rito. Bukod rito, nabanggit ng lumikha ang kapansin-pansing katabaan ng mga Pilipino. Para sa lumikha, nakakatuwang isipin na may mga nagtatabaang Pilipino sa kabila ng sangkaterbang problema nila. Ngunit bukod sa pisikal na kaanyuan ng mga Pilipino, mas kapansin-pansin ang uri ng satiriko o panunudyo na nakapaloob rito. Tinagurian ang Pugad Baboy na isang “satirikong pampulitikal” o sa madaling salita, pinupuna nito ang kapalpakan ng pamahalaan sa pamamagitan ng komedya o katatawanan. Ipinapakita rito ang mga daing ng mga Pilipino sa gobyerno sa paraang nakakatawa, ngunit masakit rin kung tumama. Kaya nga siguro “Pugad Baboy” ang ipinangalan rito; kasunod sa “Pugad Lawin” kung saan unang narinig ang hibik ng mga Pilipino para sa rebolusyon. Pero hindi lamang gobyerno ang pinupuna rito, maging ang mga likas nang masasamang gawi ng mga Pilipino.

Ang “alaskador” ng Pugad Baboy

Si Apolonio “Pol” Medina ang promotor ng lahat ng kalokohan ng Pugad Baboy gang. Sa unahan ng bawat isyu ng Pugad Baboy, ipinapakita ang maikli niyang talambuhay na ginawang kawili-wili sa pamamagitan ng karikatura at pambibiro niya. Ayon sa istrip, si “Pol” ay isang arkitekto subalit matapos ang dalawang taon niyang pagtatrabaho sa Iraq bilang isang OFW (overseas Filipino worker), naubos ang lahat ng kanyang naipon at nakaramdam ng kagipitan. Noong 1988, nagsimula siyang mag-drowing ng iba’t- ibang kartoon at naisip niyang pagkakitaan ito. Hindi lamang ang mga iginuguhit ni Pol ang may makulay na istorya, maging kanyang mga pakikipagsapalaran ay parang komiks rin. Sa paghahanap niya sa Manila Bulletin sa Intramuros, Maynila, naligaw siya at napagpasiyahang magtanong sa isang tambay doon. Nagtanong siya ngunit kahit ang tambay ay hindi sigurado kung tama ba ang binibigay niyang direksyon kay Pol. Sumunod pa rin si Pol ngunit imbes na mapunta sa Manila Bulletin, narating niya ang Philippine Daily Inquirer na mahigpit pang kalaban ng naunang nabanggit na pahayagan. Maluwag namang tinanggap ng Inquirer ang komik istrip ni Pol at magpasahanggang-ngayon ay tinatangkilik pa rin ang kahanga-hangang niyang talento. Ipinanganak si Pol noong 1960 at noong 1962, nakita ang kanyang talento sa pagguhit. At ang lahat ng sumunod na naganap ay bahagi na ng kasaysayan.

Ang mga Kakuntsaba ni Pol

Ayon sa testimonya ng lumikha, ang mga tauhan sa kanyang komik istrip ay hango sa napapansin niya sa tunay na buhay. Kaya nga nagsilbi ang kanyang komiks na repleksyon ng buhay ng mga Pilipino sa loob ng humigit- kumulang apat na taon. Narito ang listahan ng mga karikaturang binigyang- buhay ni Pol at nagbigay- buhay sa mambabasa dahil sa pambibiro nilang puno ng katuturan.
Si Polgas. Siya ang bida ng buong komik istrip. Ang pangalan niya ay mula sa salitang “pulgas” ng aso. Tinagurian siyang “ang asong hindi”, superdog, at dobermaxx. Ang kanyang “pag-iisip na parang tao” ay nag-ugat sa paglamon niya ng “misteryosong bibingka” ng kanyang amo at ang radiation na nakuha niya mula sa panonood ng telebisyon. Nagiging aso pa rin naman siya kahit papaano, ngunit depende ito kung kalian niya gustuhin. Dahil sa mala-tao niyang pag-iisip at pagkilos, kinuha siya ng isang kunwari’y ahensya ng militar na OCB o Organized Canine Bureau na binuo upang tuligsain at kontrolin ang pagbebenta ng mga askal (asong-kalye) upang maging pulutan. Dahil dito, tinawag siyang wisedog at nang kalaunan ay tinawag din siyang dobermaxx nang aksidenteng maipadala siya at ang mga resident eng Pugad Baboy sa taong 2078. Marami pang aliyas si Polgas na bahagi na rin ng panggagaya sa ilang sikat na pangalan. Halimbawa nito ang mga: Amorsolo na kunwari’y isang di nakilalang miyembro ng Ninja Turtles, Aquapol na hango kay Aquaman, Growlsbuster na panggagaya sa sikat na Ghostbusters, at marami pang iba.
Ang pamilyang Sungcal. Repleksyon ito ng tipikal na pamilyang Pilipino at ito ang may-ari sa wisedog na si Polgas.
Si Mang Dagul. Siya ang padre de pamilya na isang kusinero sa isang five star hotel. Lagi siayng binibiro dahil sa kanyang malaking tiyan dahil sa pagiging manginginom at dahil sa napapanot niyang ulo. Siya ang “Sweet Ham” ng kanyang asawang si Debbie.
Si Debbie. Siya ang ilaw ng tahanan ng mga Sungcal at mahilig siya sa shopping kaya laging butas ang bulsa ni Mang Dagul. Tinatawag siyang “Honeycured” ng kanyang asawa.
Si Tiny. Kabaligtaran ng kanyang pangalan, siya ang napakalaki at napakatabang babaeng anak ni Mang Dagul. Lagi niyang sinasabi na siya ay seksi at may baywang na 28 pulgada kung sa katunayan ay 28 pulgada siya noong siya’y sampung taon pa lamang.
Si Utoy. Siya ang pinakabatang Pugad Baboy. Sa murang edad na walong taong gulang ay sadyang napakatalino niya. Namana niya mula s kanyang ama ang malisyoso niyang pag-iisip.
Si Brosia. Siya ay si Ambrosia Tangara, ang katulong ng pamilya na mula sa Ginoog, Sorsogon. Simple lang ang deskripsyon sa kanya—walang isip. Lagi niyang katalo ang kanyang among si Mang Dagul.
Ang pamilyang Sabaybunot. Repleksyon ito ng isang marahas ngunit kahit papaano’y matahimik na pamilya.
Si Tomas. Siya ay isang sarhento ng Philippine Air Force. Mahilig siyang maglasing at hilig niyang ipagmayabang ang kanyang baril pero, isa naman siyang under-de-saya sa kanyang asawa.
Si Barbie. Siya ang peministang asawa ni Tomas. At dahil sa pagiging peminista, kinatatakutan siya ng sarhento niyang asawa.
Si Paltik. Siya ang nag-iisang anak ng mag-asawa na mabuting kaibigan ni Utoy. Di tulad ng matalinong si Utoy, isang tunay na alaskador si Paltik. Lagi niyang binibiro ang kanyang gurong si Miss Nobastos na mukhang kabayo.
Ang pamilyang Tang. Repleksyon ito ng pamilyang Tsinoy na naninirahan at nagenenegosyo rito sa Pilipinas kahit pa Tsina ang kanilang bansa. “Sa dami ng populasyon ng mga Intsik maging ang Pilipinas ay nagiging second home na sa kanila”, ayon kay Pol Medina.
Si Mao. Siya ay isang Intsik na nagnenegosyo rito sa Pilipinas sa pamamagitan ng isang sari- sari store. May dalawang ibig ipahiwatig ang kanyang pangalan: “ma-utang” at “ma-utangan”. Mahilig siyang mangutang lalo na para pampuhunan at lagi rin naman siyang inuutangan lalo na ng mga lasenggerong istambay sa kanilang tindahan.
Si Pao. Siya naman ang bading na anak ni Mao. Bestpren niya si Tiny at sadyang bading na bading ang kanyang pagkilos. Nagmamay-ari siya ng isang beauty parlor.
Ang pamilyang Lamouns. Mula ito sa salitang “lamon” na ang ibig sabihin ay lumamon o kumain ng napakarami. Mula sa salita, ang hilig ng pamilyang ito ay iisa—ang paglamon.
Si Bab. Siya ang lutang na lutang na tauhan mula sa pamilyang Lamouns. Isa siyang tamad, walang pakinabang, walang kuwenta ngunit nakakatawang tauhan na patay na patay kay Tiny. Lagi siyang bigo sa kanyang pag-ibig ngunit pagminsan ay nagtatagumpay rin siya, ‘yun nga lang pagkatapos ng dalawang segundo nang sagutin siya ni Tiny ay busted na naman siya.

Sa mga Magiging Adik sa Pugad Baboy

Ang Pugad Baboy ay parang isang joke book; kahit corny, hindi mo pa rin maiiwasang matawa. Ang uri ng pambibiro dito ay naiiba dahil sa may katuturan nitong mga biro. Kahit na minsan may pagka-green ito, napapanatili pa rin nito ang aral na nakapaloob rito—ang pagpapahalaga sa moralidad ng tao, kung ano ang mga obligasyon ng gobyerno at karapatan ng mga mamamayan. Nakakatawa ang nilalaman nito ngunit sadyang ginawa ito upang tumuligsa sa isang kawili-wiling paraan. Ika nga nila, ginawa ito hango sa mga kilala nating “kuwentong barbero”. Mga nakakatawang kuwento na may malakas na patama sa mga nagkamali. Hindi masamang pagtawanan ang pagkakakmali kung minsan. Sa katunayan, mas maganda ngang pagtawanan ito upang habambuhay ay manatili itong aral para sa atin, para hindi na natin ito muling ulitin. Dahil sa masayahing kalikasan nito, tinangkilik ito ng napakaraming mambabasa at naging matagumpay naman si Pol Medina, ang lumikha, sa paghahatid ng daing ng mga Pilipino nang walang nagbabadyang pagluha.

Education’s Worth

My transformation, thanks to you…

Definitely, the greatest privilege anyone could have and perhaps, the most precious treasure anyone could get hold of is education. They say, “it is the only possession that could not be stolen away from anybody,” then I say, it has been the possession that is worth investing for.

La Salle has been my inspiration to see this reality. When I was little, I never liked the thought of going to school except if I play with my friends. But as I mature, as the time I’ve got left in school is finally counting down, I realized that school doesn’t only mean making friends; however, education is the most important lesson in school. It is the sole constituent that would bring us to the eminence we have desired to achieve.

Through education, I was transformed from a futile and ignorant duckling to a productive and intellectual swan. I was bestowed with beauty and intellect that would help me conquer all the obstacles I have to face yet.

I owe it all to La Salle. La Salle has helped me recognize the importance of education. It has molded me to be a person ready to face the world. It has equipped me all the knowledge that not only has made me an intellectual but perhaps also, cultivated me as a wise man, with all the courage to stand all difficulties that befall on me as I travel through time, through life.

La Salle brought not only prestige; but most especially, knowledge, education itself. It has opened my mind to the wonderful and vast world of science; yet it has taught our hearts to care for the world, the environment that succumbs us; and yet, it has even nurtured our souls to convict our faith. These are all the essentials to triumph.

Therefore, education is really the key that would open my door to success. And definitely, everyone else’s too; one just needs to realize its significance and invest on it. I tell you, the investment is worthless compared to all the profit.

Perhaps, the real essence of life depends on change. If it weren’t for change, there might not have been existence. If it weren’t for change, life might not be worth living at all.

The world is constantly changing; no doubt about that. There is no need to look farther; look at you. Even the simplest things around you to most complicated ones change. It seems that we are on an unending metamorphosis of our lives.

Metamorphosis. Probably, the same word would remind you of the development of a butterfly. But in similar instances, we, too, have been the butterfly of our life while the world serves as our sanctuary. We, too, change constantly, and change definitely transforms our life whether to its worse scenario or hopefully, at its best.

The clock turns, so as the wheel of life spins.

Over the years, there have been a lot of changes and improvements not only in school, where probably our life revolves most. But everywhere-- from the streets we used to cross to the establishments we used to hangout, from the rules we have to abide by everyday and to all the duties we have to accomplish for our self and for others as well. The funny thing is-- we have changed, but do we really think it is for the better?

Look around you. In every corner is a sign of poverty, of disarray. There are men who are in dire need; but are their demands answered? People die not because of scarcity of food but because of other people’s gluttony. Even those considered as the noblest of all are the promoters of greed. They would do anything to be richer when in fact, they possess all the material things in the world. Perhaps, our sanctuary has been led by modern-day swindlers, with words so sweet to hear yet with actions so vicious. But why are we tolerating them? We are given the privilege to change it. And if change really is existent, then why is it that the citizens could not change this injustice? Is it the “change” we want our country to have?

Let us not go farther. Let us start in school. With the start of a new year, there have been a lot of apparent changes. It starts from the improved logos and revised mission- vision of La Salle to newly amended rules and regulations of the school. What is noticeable though is the similar response of each student to these regulations. For instance, when signboards indicate where to throw the trash, there are more candy wrappers in the stairs than in the trash bin, itself. Funny how it attests to a theory that “man, by nature, is really… stubborn”. When one restricts another of doing something, the inferior insists on violating the order. Can’t we change such scenario?

No one’s perfect. I admit I am not perfect too. I, too, am guilty of my negligence to the rules. But still, we have to correct our own imperfections. Faults are not made to be repeated but rather they are made to be eradicated totally from human life. We are educated by experience to learn from our faults and never to repeat them again. We need to progress not to regress. If we really want development, let us start within ourselves before we work through others. Perhaps, leaders may have lapses in their authorities; but let us remember that change, specifically improvement, starts with the simplest body and works its way through a larger one. We need to adapt to the change of environment not because we want to but because we have to for the sake of ourselves and of others.

Change for the better to live a better future.
The world is your sanctuary. Make all necessary changes.
And someday, you’ll be the butterfly that you have always dreamt to be. Indeed, life is really worth it.

Love = force + MEN?

Girls are not made for men.
Actually, I think it’s the other way around.

Before I start this exposition, I extend my apologies to considerate men reading this article. I am sorry but it’s time that girls out there should go back to their senses and see if guys are already living their life and if these girls are being so pathetic obeying their stupid boyfriends’ commands. (as if they are royalties)

I don’t mean to hurt anyone but after seeing how we, girls, have been acting around our guys, it seems as if they are not “our guys” anymore but rather we are “their girls” at present. See the difference?

Let us go back to the time when ladies during the barbaric times of Middle Ages are treated like properties, like attendants who are supposed to obey every command of their gods. Imagine putting this vicious scene in present day. What are we like? Robots?

I guess you can now see what I mean. I am not a man- hater but just a concerned female. And I believe my concerns are quite clear. I prefer women who are able to fight, not physically but emotionally. I fight for women who are strong, who can love and be loved without giving up their desires when they are still single.

Love. Yeah, it, perhaps, is the reason any girl can come up to cover the abusive actions of “their guys”. But come to think of it, if this man really loves you so, just like the way he tells you, will he let his ego go on his way and make you follow everything he tells you? Look at yourself, you lost your friends just because your man has been asking you to follow him everywhere you go; but then, you’ll see him hang out with his friends and you’ll pretend as if you wanted to hang out with these egotistical maniacs just because you wish to be with their master, your boyfriend. Do you really want a relationship that revolves only in him and his friends? What about your own desires?

The worst part of it all is that-- what happens when you gave up everything, your everything, just to be with him; and suddenly, he disappears just like another chapter in your scrapbook that you are willing to throw away but still, you regret to do so since you’ve rendered too much time and wasted too much effort for it. And perhaps, what is much worse than worst is that if he left you hanging, just like an old toy, worn out and lost its charm already.

Prevention is better than cure. It doesn’t mean you have to avoid guys. No, absolutely not. It only implies that before we commit ourselves to a relationship, we must choose and screen our prospects carefully. We must allot ample time before saying the most precious “yes” to them. We must try to see behind his very attractive eyes (sarcasm here.) or cheesy smiles his real personality, whether it be a monster or hopefully, a truly wonderful persona.

Remember that love doesn’t mean following each others’ orders. And abuses work not only for women but in some cases for men also. Love is not selfish. It is always kind. In order to have that lasting relationship, both must learn to compromise and to understand fully each other’s feelings. Love is a two way process. It is dysfunctional if love only works for the benefit of one participant. It is not wrong to love and be loved at a young age, what’s wrong is to love irresponsibly. Just remember, that with privilege comes specific obligations. Love is a privilege. And two lovers are entitled to the fulfillment of their obligations.

I care less about your opinion in my views. My objective is to bring you to your senses, to let you see that you are nothing if you’ll let other people live your life and let them treat you like a doormat, always willing to absorb all their dirt. I have done my part and now it’s your time. It’s your decision to stay what you are right now or do something about your flaws. It’s your choice. I just have only one more thing to remind you…
